Let me just preface this by saying, I don't want to wear a burka. Especially seeing how summer has kicked off with a nice humid sweaty swamp ass of a day today. I appreciate my freedom to wear a dress, and have a little cleavage.
But, as I look at other women walking in to work today, I am beginning to start to sympathize with the concept of the burka a little bit more.
I remember reading a story about how Joe DiMaggio was completely enraged when Marilyn's infamous "skirt blowing up" scene was being filmed. How he kept storming off the set, because over 2,000 fans came to watch the scene. He hated that so many other people were seeing her body. In fact, her consistent roles of just the "sex pot" is one of the major reasons they divorced.
Today walking down 52nd and Lexington where that exact scene was filmed, you could literally see someone wearing nothing but a halter top and booty shorts, and no one would look twice. All kinds of stretch marks, faded out titty tattoos, muffin tops stuffed into a pair of leggings, just strolling down the street for all to witness. All that "goodness" on display. To quote Chris Rock "You can't just whip out a 40 year old titty that's your man's titty. That is your man's titty 40 year old titty your man's titty." But at any suggestion that we cover up a little bit...we rebel. Fight. Argue about being oppressed.
That's how desensitized we have become to sexuality in this country.
Joe and Marilyn popped into my head the other night as I was getting ready to go out with my boyfriend.
That fine line between, still being the sexy woman he was attracted to when we met, but also recognizing that I now need to somehow figure a way to draw less attention from OTHER men, while at the same time keep MY man from having a wandering eye.
It's literally a Catch-22. Joe knew what he was getting from Marilyn when they met. You can't tell me it was her charming personality that first attracted him.
And then, BOOM, she was a wife, and thus...all that had to be reserved just for him.
So, I see the point of the burka...from a modesty perspective. It's exciting to know that you are the ONLY man that sees your wife's "goodies." As a man, it's an awesome concept. And I see the point of being overly-sexual in your dressing. You're a women, free and bold, able to pick and choose whatever fashion you'd like.
The middle ground is the tricky part. I miss the days when a knee-length pencil skirt and sensible blouse were sexy. Now, if I were to wear that out to a club, people would look at me sideways and ask if I was going to a business meeting. While they stand there in fishnet body suits and see-thru lace shirts, leaving NOTHING to the imagination, and I ask them if THEY are going to perform on stage.
When did stripper-clothes become party clothes?
In a society where I am constantly bombarded with images of perfect naked bodies. Where at 9 am on a Wednesday I just saw Kate Upton's nipple in a magazine like it was no big deal. Where porn is a multi-billion dollar mainstream industry, with Playboy sitting on the shelf right next to Glamour, instead of the hidden "secret pleasure" of men in the past. Where so many women are prancing around nearly naked. Sex is constantly used in advertising, tv, radio, video, billboards. People talk about blow jobs and threesomes as if they were discussing the new Steven King novel over coffee.
In the face of 20-year old titties flying at him from all directions at the bar/clubs/etc, How am I to keep my boyfriend's interest, and still keep my modesty without looking like an old lady?
Any woman can have her titties out and tights on and get attention. But the one that most guys really want is the one that has the sexyness without that overdosing shit. U ever wonder why men make sex dreams out of girls in school uniforms, maid outfits, nuns, etc? Those things aren't regularly sexy things and they made men curious of the possibilities of those people.
ReplyDeleteI debate this daily...it is catch 22
